That was a real roller-coaster of a read - without any shades of irony & bitterness (just coz u're on a wheelchair) - and in it I found myself experiencing the total acceptance & love specially between you and your wife. 
I guess most of us are not ready to lend a supportive ear & eye - jaundiced by the general view of someone with a visible disability who has accepted it and plain & simple just wants to move on in life.

Thanks CaravanBpl for dropping by on my page. I like the Mencius quote. To be honest, there is bitterness but one tries to channelise all negative emotions into something constructive. Hopefully things will change. Unfortunately they don't always change as quickly as you want them to, but one keeps on.
